WOW, this has to be the greatest squeal to a video game ever. It improves on the original in EVERY way possible and is exclusive to the Gamecube. It basically makes the first game look crap. It also the probably the greatest 4- player ever (I have yet to play TimeSplitters 2) on any system so far. Although the game has a huge single player game that includes collecting trophies it’s main focus is the 4-player. There are lots to say but I can’t be bothered so I’ll get to the graphics and move on from there.

Visuals

Amazing, this game has TONS going on the screen at once in almost every level. That doesn’t mean that the characters are not detailed. They are modeled even to their teeth but you won’t be looking at their teeth unless you press start and move the camera. Let’s take the F-Zero Mute City level for example. There’s are 4 players, a changing background, background music, ALL 30 F-Zero racers from the N64 version racing around the track and the items (you can turn these off in settings) at once. These F-Zero racers are also interactive. They usually hit you but you can throw Donkey Kong down and all 30 Racers will hit him and you will laugh so much. All this runs at 60 FPS (Frames Per Second) WITHOUT SLOWDOWN. The characters always keep their high quality details. The best way to check the graphics is to look at our pictures section or go into trophy mode and look at the characters by zooming on them.

Audio

What can I say! It’s basically all your Favourite Nintendo tunes past or present. Each level has it’s own tune that matches the level you are playing. If you are playing on Pikachu’s level then you will hear a Pokemon theme (no remix). You also get characters voices (Fox’s is fake) and each character has about 30 grunts, yells or screams. All these come in the highest quality possible on a Gamecube disc and is best heard by using a decent pair of headphones. Unlock Sound Test to get the most out of the audio features in this game.

Gameplay

Very basic Gameplay here.

Xavier’s Bottom Line

Super Smash Brothers Melee is the greatest fighting game ever. (If you want to call it a fighting game) It’s mainly due to the fact that this game is FILLED with so many options and setting that you can change. This game was made to be addictive and it is. Nintendo have added everything you could want in a fighting game. This game is not worth renting just buying because this game lasts more than 3 days. I’ve had the game since it’s launch in Europe and I’ve yet to see everything and always come back for a quick/long game. If you have a Gamecube BUY this game it should be cheap at your local games retailer. If you don’t have a Gamecube at least go to a friends house and try it out I’m sure you’ll love it.

Graphics – 94%

Not the most detailed game ever, but with so many things going on the screen at 60 FPS it is impressive.

Audio – 95%

Almost every tune in the game feels perfect. Advice- Use headphones to the get the most out of the sound.

Gameplay – 93%

Easy to get in to and very enjoyable to almost everyone like every other Nintendo game. Loads of options keep the Gameplay fresh.

Lifespan – 96%

This game takes forever to complete. There’s 290 trophies to collect in this game and I’m on 284 since 24th May 2002 and I consider myself a good gamer. You even have to play for 20 hours (not at once) to get Mew two as a character. So far I’ve got about 250 hours in this game so far and I’m not bored of this yet.

Final Mark - 95%
